Sexuality - headache - symptoms

Dr. med. Britta Bürger, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician

Every kind of sexual activity that leads to an orgasm, including oral sex and masturbation, can trigger headaches.

Patients that suffer from the “explosive” form of sexual headache develop sudden and violent headaches during their orgasms (orgasm headache). Data about the duration of these attacks is still insufficient. At the moment the current information suggests a duration between one minute and three hours. After the pain attack, a slight feeling of pain often lingers on for quite some time. Similar to migraine, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and photophobia can occur parallel to the headache.

The “dull headache” (Pre-orgasm headache) originates from the back of the head and the neck and increases with rising arousal. This kind of sexual headache can be alleviated by lying down and worsened by sitting down or standing.
